| It depends.
If your band has a message to get across, then of course you'd need one to get the message across. But if you're purely a guitar work showcase such as Cacophony, or Rising Force, the lyrics will be manufactured and will have no meaning. Which will defeat the entire point of having the singer in the first place. | |

| I'd say 2000.
Grunge came out and it was all good, though Metal was on life support in the background, and whatever. Then 1999 came and we were subjected to the worst pop <snip> imaginable for a cheesy cash-in on the millenium. The forumla worked so well, that 2000 came, pop was going nuts, and nu-metal came. All good musicianship left.
